Alma's Story
MESA helped me find my passion for biomedical engineering. It was my first year participating and one of the competitions had a prosthetic hand which interested me a lot and my mentor at the time noticed my interest and helped me understand more of what it takes to be a biomedical engineer. If it wasn’t for MESA I wouldn’t have explored any STEM fields and experience the networking skills that MESA also provides during the competition days. I learned so much about different students and their thought process during the same challenges we had and also created memories with people who I didn’t know at first.
After participating in MESA I went to high school where I participated in FIRST robotics competition and computer science courses. During my time in high school my computer science teacher nominated me for a National Center for Women & Information Technology and got the national Honorable mention award in 2020. I graduated in 2020 and started university at Grand Canyon University. During my university years I have been a part of research, biomedical engineering society, and society of women engineers. I have mentored high schoolers and created a competition portion for ACSI.
